Jen yarns to Jharal and Ranger Stacey about the new single “Elevator Ride” with her band Jen Mize & The Rough N’ Tumble.

That feeling when you’re a just-tall-enough kid waiting for
your turn on that thrilling carnival ride. Or that buzz you got
when you were 10, climbing those slippery steps at your local
pool for your first dive off the highest platform, and it feels
like every single person you know is watching. Or maybe it’s
that rare, life-changing sensation when you meet your
person, your people- and you know in your gut that
something special is happening.
Elevator Ride, the first single from Jen Mize & The Rough N’
Tumble’s debut LP (scheduled for an early 2023 release)
captures all these emotions beautifully.
Though they hadn’t met, Jeremy Edwards and Jen Mize had
heard a lot about each other from mutual friends, who
always said they should really get together to write some
songs. If they had known what would have come of their
first co-write, they most likely would have made sure it happened much sooner.
After meeting and working together as songwriting mentors at the Dag Sheep Station Songwriters Retreat in
2018, where they now regularly teach alongside Shane Nicholson, Kevin Bennett, Felicity Urquhart and Luke
O’Shea – they did, finally, team up and what came next was a flurry of songs captured over one weekend at
Jeremy’s home on the New South Wales South Coast.
Writing 4 songs in 2 days, on their last night and after a family meal, a bottle or two of Pinot Noir and a few long
chats into the wee hours, the family went to bed and then Jen n’ Jez started on one last song. That final song was
Elevator Ride. They tried to write quietly, giggling like the reckless children they mention in the 2nd verse, but it’s
easy to hear the excitement in their whispered words on the iPhone demo they took late that night.
Elevator Ride is all about the energy, freedom and exuberance that comes from finding such a rare flowing
collaboration, a true partnership in music. The song is a celebration of life, friendship and belonging.
