Firstly, Paula and Tabatha would like to give much respect to the families mentioned in this episode. We love, we grieve, we stand with you. We wish to give these young people the respect they deserve under a system that demonises First Nations’ peoples by exposing injustice on our communities which continue without a mention in mainstream media. As a First Nations’ broadcasting platform we mean no harm and only hope to cause awareness of the atrocities that still occur to this very day.
Paula and Tabatha discuss the outcome of a 12-week trial (May 2025) over the death of 15-year-old Cassius Turvey (WA) in 2022. Cassius was murdered for suspected car damage while walking home from school with his friends. 2 men were charged with murder. 1 man charged with manslaughter and 1 woman acquitted. We also speak of the death of 14-year-old Elijah Doherty in 2016 (Kalgoorlie, WA) who was killed by a 56-year-old male (name suppressed by Court Order) who was acquitted and charged for the lesser sentence of ‘Driving Dangerously and Causing Death’ of Elijah over the suspected theft of a dirt-bike. We speak about the abhorrent death of 17-year-old teenager Thomas ‘TJ’ Hickey in Redfern 2004 (NSW) after a police pursuit which resulted in TJ being impaled on a fence. The ‘Redfern Riots’ were the outcry from the local Aboriginal community of TJ’s death and the constant police intimidation and harrassment. We also speak of the unresolved truth of the death of 18-year-old Daniel Yock who passed away 75 minutes after his arrest in Kurilpa in 1993 (West End, Meanjin (Brisbane)) which also caused public outcry and distress within the Meanjin community.
