LT – Black Arts with Thomas Weatherall

VIEW ALL EPISODES

Join Rachael for a very special episode of Let’s Talk – Black Arts, as she digs into big topics of grief, healing, authenticity, power, and justice with Kamilaroi writer and performer Thomas Weatherall. Rachael & Thomas reflect on his role as Malakai in the 2022 remake of Heartbreak High, and the challenges and joys of playing a role that has become so widely beloved. They talk about the skyrocketing popularity of the show, both in so-called australia and overseas, and the interesting ways that it has brought an awareness of Blak culture to the world stage. Alongside his experience playing a central character in a show like Heartbreak High, Thomas also reflects on returning to stage and dance as part of his “tender and exquisite” one-man show, “Blue.” The show, which Thomas wrote as a teenager, grapples with the struggle of a young person finding his way through the transition from childhood to adulthood. The show opened at La Boite Theatre earlier this week to glowing reviews, and is on until the 1st June this year. Blue is described as a “bold and deeply personal new work from a young and revelatory new voice in Australian writing;” one which grapples with the deeply personal questions of grief, loss, healing, and justice. If you haven’t got your tickets already, head to the La Boite website: Blue – La Boite

In the meantime, settle in as Rachael & Thomas reflect on the tender and quiet struggle of finding yourself as an artist; of carving out a voice that feels honest, while also letting work be work. Another rich episode of Let’s Talk Black Arts, ending with every artist’s favourite question: where to from here?
